Some Questions #26: Still Corners!

Το Some Questions επανέρχεται στη δράση με τους 26ους καλεσμένους του, τους Λονδρέζους Still Corners -όπως αναφέραμε και στο ποστ για το πρόωρο αντίο της Trish Keenan των (αγαπημένων τους) Broadcast. Άξιοι αντίπαλοι των Ancients στο κρυφτούλι, αφήνουν ελάχιστες πληροφορίες για την ταυτότητά τους να βγουν προς τα έξω. Λίγα είναι αυτά που γνωρίζουμε: έχουν τη βάση τους στο Λονδίνο και έχουν κυκλοφορήσει μόνο ένα EP και ένα-δυο συνγκλάκια. Έτυχε όμως ένα απ'αυτά να φτάσει στ'αυτιά μας έστω κι αργά και να μας μαγέψει. Έτσι, ακούγοντας και το υπόλοιπο υλικό τους, προστεθήκαμε κι εμείς στην ολοένα και μεγαλύτερη λίστα των ανθρώπων που περιμένουν με ενθουσιασμό το πρώτο τους album. Το some beans, περίεργο και διεισδυτικό όπως πάντα, χτύπησε την ηλεκτρονική τους πόρτα και κατάφερε να αποσπάσει άλλο ένα στοιχείο: ένα μέλος τους λέγεται Greg. Ο Greg λοιπόν είναι ο άνθρωπος που απαντά στις ερωτήσεις μας. Για τα περαιτέρω, υπομονή μέχρι το καλοκαίρι!

We've just wrapped up recording our latest single and have been working on full length which we hope to have out this summer.

Sail.

Buttoning my shirt all the way to the top.

11. Which role you would like to have played if you were an actor?

Ferris Bueller or Robert Dupea.

I've always dreamed I was Superman saving people.

Some Questions #25: The Ancients!

Όσο τραγικά κι αν είναι κάποια γεγονότα η ζωή συνεχίζει να κυλάει. Ειδικά όταν ο πλανήτης βρίσκεται μέσα στην ευδαιμονία της πιο εορταστικής εβδομάδας του χρόνου, αυτής δηλαδή που μεσολαβεί ανάμεσα στα Χριστούγεννα και την Πρωτοχρονιά. Το some beans φέτος δε στόλισε αλλά ετοίμασε κάποια πραγματάκια, προσπαθώντας να διώξει το 2010 με τρόπο (ή όχι) έξω απ'την πόρτα. Το πρώτο απ'αυτά είναι το εορταστικό 25ο Some Questions που μας πάει στη μακρινή Αυστραλία για να συναντήσαουμε μια από τις πιο ευχάριστες εκπλήξεις της φετινής -και περσινής- χρονιάς: οι Ancients, καθοδηγούμενοι από τον Jonathan Michell, κυκλοφόρησαν μέσα στον τελευταίο ενάμισι χρόνο δυο δίσκους με υπέροχη folk-pop. Ο πρώτος απ'αυτούς, με περισότερη έμφαση στο "folk" κομμάτι, έφτασε στ'αυτιά μας στις αρχές του 2010 και μας άφησε να ψαχνόμαστε από πού μας ήρθε και το ότι φαίνεται ν'ανήκει ημερολογιακά στο 2009 δεν ήταν αρκετό για να τον βγάλει από τη λίστα που θα δείτε μέσα στις επόμενες μέρες, ενώ και ο λίγο πιο "pop" δεύτερος δεν πήγε πίσω. Περισσότερα όμως για τις λίστες όταν πρέπει, δηλαδή πολύ σύντομα -προς το παρόν δίνουμε το μικρόφωνο στον Jon για να μας απαντήσει!

The Fall: "Blood Outta Stone (Sinister Waltz version)"

5. Your favourite Beatles song?

It'd have to be one of the following: "The Long and Winding Road" (Phil Spector version), "Octopus' Garden", "I Am The Walrus", "The Fool on the Hill", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", or "Across The Universe". Some kids think you are a sap if you like Paul's ballads but these things are cyclical in a Beatles fan's life. This cycle includes not liking the Beatles sometimes.

6. A musician/band you think is criminally underrated?

Felt. Not unknown or uncelebrated but proportionate to the quality of the songs, they are criminally underrated. Better than the 'Bunnymen, up there with The Smiths, the following songs are as good as those by any band IMO: "Crystal Ball", "The Stagnant Pool", "Penelope Tree", "My Face is on Fire", "Vasco de garma", "The World is Soft As Lace", "Sunlight Bathed The Golden Glow", "A Wave Crashed on Rocks", "Trails of Colour Dissolve", "Fortune" and "Evergreen Dazed".

7. Your favourite place for writing music?

My backyard.

8. What your music-related plans are for the next 12 months?

Release a split 7” with The Twerps and another with Milk Teddy, re-release our first album in Australia, record our third album and tour Europe in July (fingers crossed).

9. What you wish to do once you retire from music?

Wander my grounds mumbling to myself in the palace of the past.

10. A stylistic choice you’ve made and are now ashamed of?

No one seems to understand my time consuming and costly steam punk modifications to my clothing and appliances.

11. Which role you would like to have played if you were an actor?

I'm told I look like Oliver Reed so maybe Bill Sykes in Oliver! the musical.

12. A recurring childhood dream of yours?

I'm lost and publicly naked when I should be taking my final high school exams. Wait a second, that's a memory.

13. If you are superstitious?

I live in a tent because I don't like closed doors.

Some Questions #24: The Besnard Lakes!

Η τρελή πτήση του Some Questions συνεχίζεται, πηγαίνοντάς μας ξανά στην απέναντι όχθη του Ατλαντικού και πιο συγκεκριμένα ξανά στον Καναδά. Ακόμα μία καναδέζικη μπάντα και ταυτόχρονα ακόμα μία από τις μπάντες των οποίων το δίσκο θα έχουμε ψηλά στη λίστα μας μάς έκανε την τιμή να καθίσει στην ανακριτική καρέκλα του SQ. Μάλιστα θα λέγαμε ότι, μετά τους σχεδόν απροσπέλαστους Dungen, ήταν οι πλέον δύσκολοι στην πρόσβαση -αργήσαμε πολύ να βρούμε τον τρόπο να τους φτάσουμε! Αλλά τα καταφέραμε, και η χαρά μας όταν πήραμε τις απαντήσεις τους δεν περιγράφεται. Οι Besnard Lakes, οι δημιουργοί του πιο χορταστικού κιθαριστικού δίσκου του 2010 (για την uptight, να εξηγούμαστε), είναι οι 24οι καλεσμένοι μας και η Olga Goreas, που μαζί με το σύζυγο Jace Lasek αποτελούν την ψυχή και την καρδιά του συγκροτήματος, κάθεται αναπαυτικά κάτω από το εκτυφλωτικό φως του προβολέα...

4. Your favourite b-side?

No, it's all about the a-side! Actually, I remember that XTC had released the song "Dear God" as a b-side to what song I can't remember. So I'd have to say that that is my favourite b-side.

5. Your favourite Beatles song?

"Tomorrow Never Knows".

6. A musician/band you think is criminally underrated?

Do you mean underrated musically or criminally? Maybe both? Actually, I think I'd have to say Sly and the Family Stone. Well, maybe they're appreciated to a certain extent, but they're freaking amazing on ecstasy I'm told.

7. Your favourite place for writing music?

I don't really have a special, designated place where I write. Inspiration comes at the weirdest times and it's very hard to nail that down. Usually I prefer to be in an environment where there's activity going on - for some reason that usually allows me to focus. I suppose the (as in THE) place would be the control room of my husband's studio where we record our albums. In fact, I'm in there right now!

8. What your music-related plans are for the next 12 months?

We're finishing off work on a film score for a movie called Memories Corner, playing some shows in January in Montreal, Toronto, Detroit and Chicago, and going to Australia in March to play some shows. Hopefully by fall of next year we'll be working on new material for the next album.

9. What you wish to do once you retire from music?

Who said I'm retiring? Ha ha.... I've always wanted to go back to university and get my masters degree in something. Maybe I'll do that when I'm 75.

10. A stylistic choice you’ve made and are now ashamed of?

What a weird question! But so true... I have flirted with bad style choices, not telling though!

11. Which role you would like to have played if you were an actor?

I'd imagine it was pretty fun for Cate Blanchett to have been Jude as Bob Dylan in I'm Not There. Whoa, that's so meta.

12. A recurring childhood dream of yours?

I wish I still had the dreams that I had when I was child. I had some wonderful lucid dreams and out-of-body dreams where I was flying. I remember my sister I think told me that you die in real life if you hit the ground in your dreams. But it's not true because I did hit once and obviously I'm still alive right?

13. If you are superstitious?

....they ask on the 13th question!

Some Questions #22: Anais Mitchell!

Και να που το Some Questions αφήνει μετά από καιρό τη Σκανδιναβία και περνάει απέναντι. Μέσα στο 2010 κυκλοφόρησαν ουκ ολίγοι φιλόδοξοι δίσκοι - μεγάλη μας τιμή λοιπόν να φιλοξενούμε τη δημιουργό ενός από τους πλέον φιλόδοξους! Καλεσμένη της 22ης έκδοσης της στήλης είναι η κυρία Anais Mitchell από το Vermont. Η Anais λέει ότι το Hadestown είναι μια folk opera, αν κι εμείς θα τη λέγαμε και blues και gospel, που αφηγείται μια παραλλαγή του μύθου του Ορφέα και της Ευριδίκης μέσα σε μια ατμόσφαιρα που θυμίζει έντονα αυτήν του O Brother, Where Art Thou? των Κοέν. Εκλεκτοί καλεσμένοι όπως ο Justin Vernon (τραγουδάει σε πάρα πολλά κομμάτια), ο βραχνόφωνος folk μουσικός Greg Brown, η Ani DiFranco και οι αδερφές Hayden βοηθούν την Anais να ξετυλίξει το κουβάρι του παραμυθιού ενώ εκείνη οδηγεί το χορό με τη λεπτή φωνή της. 6. A musician/band you think is criminally underrated?

Most of my friends! I'm serious. there's too many to name...

Bathrooms and stairwells, where the music echoes back at me.

8. What your music-related plans are for the next 12 months?

I'm planning to work on two records, one is a collection of very old british and scottish songs I'm adapting with my comrade collaborator Jefferson Hamer, and the other is a solo record of new songs. I'm really excited about both of those projects! I'm also doing some special shows with the Hadestown band where we put on the Hadestown opera in different towns with different people, it's gonna be wild, I can't wait.

9. What you wish to do once you retire from music?

Read more, cook more and write long letters.

10. A stylistic choice you’ve made and are now ashamed of?

I think I've made a lot of silly choices about how I sing, the voice is such a strange subtle instrument and often when I hear my recordings especially the older ones I go, 'what was I thinking?' but I do feel like it keeps revealing itself as I get older which I suppose is a mystical process.

11. Which role you would like to have played if you were an actor?

Maybe the role of the wife in A Doll's House by Ibsen.

12. A recurring childhood dream of yours?

I often dream of singer songwriters I admire, not so much as a child, but since I was a teenager. Sometimes they give me advice. Bob Dylan wanted to have sex with me in the dream and I refused him. Bruce Springsteen told me I should write songs without ever putting pen to paper. Ani DiFranco has walked through my dreams periodically since I was fourteen years old. David Rawlings played me an entire unreleased Gillian Welch record in a dream. I dreamed of Kimya Dawson last week,
in the dream, my friend embarrassed me in front of Kimya Dawson by pouring a pint of Guinness in my lap.

13. If you are superstitious?

I've lately got into the idea that exuding positivity makes good things happen.

You know we grew some black turtle beans in our garden last summer, the pods were beautiful purplish and speckled.

Some Questions #21: Silje Nes!

Μετά το Some Questions-σταθμό που προηγήθηκε με special guests τους Dungen η στήλη μπαίνει στη δεύτερη εικοσάδα της με αισιοδοξία. Η σημερινή μας φιλοξενούμενη γεννήθηκε και κατοικοεδρεύει σε παρεμφερείς περιοχές με τους προηγούμενους - πιο συγκεκριμένα στo Leikanger της Νορβηγίας, ενώ στην παρούσα φάση μοιράζει το χρόνο της μεταξύ Bergen και Βερολίνου - αλλά ηχητικά δεν μπορεί να πει κανείς ότι βρίσκεται και πολύ κοντά τους. Η Silje Nes κυκλοφόρησε πρόσφατα τον δεύτερο δίσκο της με τίτλο Opticks και η περιοχή που καταλαμβάνουν οι αιθέριες συνθέσεις της, με κιθάρες, ηλεκτρικά πιάνα και διάφορα κρουστά να αιωρούνται μέσα σε μια ημιδιάφανη ηχητική ομίχλη, βρίσκεται εκεί που η Cat Power και η μοντέρνα folk συναντούν το shoegaze, με γειτόνισσα τη White Hinterland. Μπορούν να πάρουν το μυαλό μακριά, σε ήρεμα, βορεινά θαλασσινά τοπία με γκριζομπλέ χρώματα και τον χλωμό ήλιο του μεσονυχτίου να φωτίζει το σκηνικό - ακριβώς ό,τι χρειαζόμαστε ζώντας στην Ελλάδα δηλαδή. Oh this would drive me crazy. What about listening to the sea. Well and maybe I'd bring three American Analog Set records because they're so neutral to me that I don't know if I could possibly get tired of them.

I just heard First Aid Kit covering Fever Ray, really intoxicating, I could probably listen to that on a Sunday morning. Maybe Sunday morning before I go to bed?

I don't have any memory of any b-sides.

'Here comes the sun' is the first one that comes to my mind, that's a good morning song too. I never listened to the Beatles really.

6. A musician/band you think is criminally underrated?

I don't think i mind things being underrated, if i enjoy it myself.

7. Your favourite place for writing music?

Anywhere with a laptop and some fun equipment, and with no-one around listening in.

8. What your music-related plans are for the next 12 months?

I'll be on tour for a while and play songs from my new record, and that will probably make me sick of touring and inspired to make new things, and so then I'll make some new stuff?

9. What you wish to do once you retire from music?

Live in a little house somewhere warm and relaxed, with not much to do. I guess that just sounds like the exact opposite of what I'm doing right now, and I'd get tired of it pretty soon.

10. A stylistic choice you’ve made and are now ashamed of?

I'm ashamed of most stylistic choices I do, right after I've done them, but then I learn to live with them after a while. Probably they were never really choices after all.

11. Which role you would like to have played if you were an actor?

Batman?

12. A recurring childhood dream of yours?

I don't think it's a childhood dream, but I have a recurring dream where I drive into a stone avalanche. That's what you fear when you grow up in a mountain side I guess.

Some Questions #19: The Amazing!

Η παραγωγικότατη σουηδέζικη σκηνή που τόσο αγαπάμε δεν θα μπορούσε να μην έχει το δικό της supergroup, και να που αυτό όχι απλά υπάρχει αλλά το έχουμε και φιλοξενούμενο στη δέκατη ένατη έκδοση του Some Questions! Οι The Amazing είναι το προϊόν της συνεργασίας μελών από διάφορες σουηδικές μπάντες, εν ενεργεία ή μη (Dungen, Life On Earth!, Granada, Dreamboy, Sagor & Swing) που είπαν, σαν καλά φιλαράκια που ήταν, να ενώσουν τις μουσικές τους δυνάμεις. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι μια πιο folk εκδοχή των Dungen - πλούσιος ήχος με εντονότατες τις επιρροές της ψυχεδέλειας και μελωδικές γραμμές που φέρνουν στο μυαλό Nick Drake ή Simon & Garfunkel ή και Fleetwood Mac - και αγγλικό στίχο. Η μπάντα κυκλοφόρησε πέρυσι το ντεμπούτο της που πήρε εξαιρετικές κριτικές ενώ φέτος ακολούθησε το mini-LP Wait for a Light to Come. Ο τραγουδιστής Christoffer Gunrup ήταν αυτός που μας άφησε να ρίξουμε μια κλεφτή ματιά στο μικρόκοσμό του... (Και μας προκάλεσε να του γράψουμε ένα εκτενέστατο προσωπικό mail για να συζητήσουμε για τους Beatles, αλλά δεν το κάναμε. Προσωπικά το παθαίνω κάθε φορά που κάποιος τους αποκαλεί υπερεκτιμημένους. Συμπεριλαμβανομένου του mr.grieves όταν είναι στις κακές του.)

"Halo" (Δεν διευκρινίζει ποιο... Να υποθέσουμε της Beyoncé; Υπάρχουν και καλύτερα πάντως, εγώ θα ήθελα να είχα γράψει την κομματάρα των Depeche.)

3. Your Sunday morning song?

"The Only Living Boy in New York" (Simon & Garfunkel). One of the best songs ever. Simple and beautiful.

4. Your favourite b-side?

I don´t like B-sides. I don´t know any.

5. Your favourite Beatles song?

I find them to be very overrated, but "Across the Universe" is a great tune.

6. A musician/band you think is criminally underrated?

Oh, i don´t know. Bill Fay is a fantastic artist, but is he underrated? I don´t know.

7. Your favourite place for writing music?

In bed, lights out. Kitchen table, coffee. I do it alone. Always. Then I gather the soldiers and we fly away.

8. What your music-related plans are for the next 12 months?

Well, we have discussed world domination but we settled for recording a new album. So right now I´m trying to finish 15 songs to be released winter 2011. It´s called "Waiting for Ekrem to come" at the moment and I think it will be quite alright, actually.

9. What you wish to do once you retire from music?

I could see myself having lots and lots of money, living in a big house in Kefalonia. But it´s more likely I´ll be playing my guitar, I guess. Drinking and arguing with Reine Fiske.

10. A stylistic choice you’ve made and are now ashamed of?

Hehehehe. I did wander the streets of Stockholm all dressed in black, black hair, black nails, listening to The Cure and Sisters of Mercy. I´m not really ashamed of it, but a qualified guess is that I looked like an idiot.

11. Which role you would like to have played if you were an actor?

Dennis Hopper's in Apocalypse Now.

12. A recurring childhood dream of yours?

I remember one in which I was being chased by Zeb Macahan through rabbit holes. Very scary. I had it for a few years.

Είναι μερικές φορές που τ'αυτιά σου ζητάνε κάτι που να μην τα πολυπαιδέψει και το κεφάλι σου μια ζεστή, προσιτή μελωδία για να το κάνει να κουνηθεί ανάλαφρα. Υπάρχει μια λεπτή γραμμή που χωρίζει αυτόν το συνδυασμό από τη βαρεμάρα (με λένε James Blunt και είμαι καλά) και το να αποφύγεις να την περάσεις είναι μια τέχνη από μόνη της, ειδικά αν είσαι νέος, φιλόδοξος και Άγγλος όπως ο Liam O'Donnell. Ο Λονδρέζος καλλιτέχνης το'χει: οι μελωδίες του είναι καθαρές και γερές, με μπόλικα hooks, χτισμένες πάνω σε κλασικές βρετανικές γραμμές, και οι ενορχηστρώσεις του πολύ προσεγμένες και με ποικιλία. Δηλώνει καθαρά και ξάστερα ότι θέλει το μεγάλο κοινό και μοιάζει να έχει τα τραγούδια για να το πετύχει - το υλικό του πέφτει κάπου ανάμεσα στο Urban Hymns και στον τρίτο δίσκο που θα έπρεπε να είχε φτιάξει ο διαβόητος συνονόματός του με τον αδερφούλη του αντί για το Be Here Now, αλλά δείχνει ότι έχει πάρει τ'αυτί του και τα σύγχρονα πράγματα που δηλώνει ως επιρροές στο MySpace του. Some Questions #17: Stornoway!

Αντίθετα με τους Soft Pack, για τους σημερινούς καλεσμένους του Some Questions δεν έχουμε πει ακόμα κουβέντα αλλά αυτό είναι κάτι που θα διορθωθεί πάραυτα. Οι Stornoway είναι από την Οξφόρδη και πρόκειται για το νέο καμάρι όσων ασχολούνται με την - εξόχως ένδοξη και παραγωγική την τελευταία εικοσαετία - τοπική σκηνή. Άλλωστε το όνομά τους το πρωτοδιαβάσαμε στο θρυλικό τοπικό fanzine Nightshift και οι συχνές αναφορές του σε αυτούς μας δημιούργησαν την περιέργεια να τους ακούσουμε, περιέργεια που αυξήθηκε όταν μάθαμε και για τη συμμετοχή τους σε ένα project που είχε να κάνει με το γνωστό album-ορόσημο της yours truly. Το πρώτο τους single "Zorbing" ήταν αρκετό για να μας κάνει τουλάχιστον να τους συμπαθήσουμε και το ντεμπούτο album τους με τίτλο Beachcomber's Windowsill σφράγισε τα θετικά μας αισθήματα: μια πιο ποπ, ρομαντική, νεανική και βρετανική (και λιγότερο βουνίσια) εκδοχή των Fleet Foxes με μια φωνή που βρίσκεται κάπου ανάμεσα στον Robin Pecknold των Αμερικανών νεοfolksters και τον Tim Booth. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι ανεβαστικό και καλοκαιρινό (δεν ξεχνούν βέβαια να ρίξουν και μια δόση λατρεμένης αγγλικής μελαγχολίας στο όμορφο "The Coldharbour Road") και μας έκανε να τους στείλουμε χωρίς καθυστέρηση τις ερωτήσεις μας. Ο κιμπορντίστας Jon Ouin ήταν αυτός που ανέλαβε να εκπροσωπήσει τη μπάντα! (Αν και το "Groove Is in the Heart" σίγουρα δεν ήταν b-side, αλλά όπως και να'χει είναι τεράστια κομματάρα οπότε σχωρεμένος...)

Very superstitious - we have such time-consuming and complicated rituals before gigs that we sometimes forget that we are about to play music.

Some Questions #16: The Soft Pack!

Και πάνω που μιλάγαμε για τους Soft Pack τσουπ! Απαντήσαν στο εφηβικό πλέον (γίναμε 16 κύριοι) ερωτηματολόγιό μας. Ο Matty McLoughlin - ο κιθαρίστας τους - προσπάθησε να μας καταστήσει σαφές οτι είναι ο ίδιος και όχι ο συνονόματος vocalist των Soft Pack Matt Lamkin. Ο συγχρονισμός τους πάντως ήταν φοβερός και οφείλουμε να τους το αναγνωρίσουμε. Όχι τίποτα άλλο αλλά θα νομίζετε οτι γράφουμε πάντα καλά λόγια για τα συγκροτήματα που επικοινωνούν μαζί μας σαν κάτι άλλα έντυπα, γνωστά και μη εξαιρετέα.

Some Questions #15: Hjaltalin!

Εδώ και λίγους μήνες η Ισλανδία ήταν στο επίκεντρο του παγκόσμιου ενδιαφέροντος επειδή έδινε στον πλανήτη στάχτη και μπούρμπερη. Καθώς όμως το ηφαίστειο Πωςσκατατολένε σιγά σιγά ηρέμησε, το συμπαθέστατο νησί επανήλθε στο να μας δίνει το εδώ και πολλά χρόνια πιο φημισμένο του προϊόν: σπουδαίους μουσικούς! Οι Hjaltalin είναι επτά ζωή να'χουν, κατοικοεδρεύουν στο Ρέικιαβικ και μέσα στο Μάιο κυκλοφόρησαν διεθνώς τον δεύτερο δίσκο τους με τίτλο Terminal. Το είδος που μοιάζει να τραβιέται περισσότερο φέτος, δηλαδή η πλούσια ορχηστρική ποπ, βρίσκεται κι εδώ σε μια εκδοχή λίγο πιο εξωστρεφή και soul από τους Efterklang. Η βραχνή φωνή του Högni Egilsson εξισορροπείται τέλεια από την ισλανδική εκδοχή της Shirley Bassey, Sigríður Thorlacius και το καλοκαιρινότατο "Feels Like Sugar" αποτελεί για μας ένα από τα τραγούδια της χρονιάς... Ο μπασίστας της μπάντας Guðmundur Óskar Guðmundsson, ή αλλοιώς απλά Gummi, ανέλαβε να εκπροσωπήσει τους συντρόφους του απαντώντας στα καυτά ερωτήματα που του θέσαμε! I once had two earrings in my right ear. That was in the 90's. And it was because a famous duo from Norway (very famous in Iceland at least), two brothers, had those earrings. And i also had a mullet to look like one of them.

Tony Montana in Scarface.

12. A recurring childhood dream of yours?

My dream was always to become a farmer and a horse trainer. I tried that for some years, but I'm glad I became a musician in staid.

Some Questions #14: The Irrepressibles!

Το συναίσθημα όταν σου απαντάει στο email σου με τις ερωτησούλες ένας καλλιτέχνης είναι πάντα φοβερό. Όσο κι αν ξέρεις ότι πρόκειται για κανονικούς ανθρώπους που κάνουν κανονικά πράγματα όπως το να ψωνίζουν στο supermarket ή να μαγειρεύουν ή να απαντάνε σε email με απλές ερωτήσεις, η ιδέα ότι έρχεσαι έστω κι από μακριά σε επαφή με αυτούς που γράφουν τη μουσική που επενδύει και ενίοτε συνταράσσει τη ζωή σου πάντα κάνει κάτι μέσα σου να πεταρίζει χαρούμενα. Και το εφέ πολλαπλασιάζεται όταν πρόκειται για έναν καλλιτέχνη με του οποίου τη δουλειά τυχαίνει να περνάς έναν τρελό έρωτα τη συγκεκριμένη περίοδο. Μου συνέβη πέρυσι με τον DM Stith και ξανασυβαίνει τώρα! Κυρίες και κύριοι, το Some Questions σας παρουσιάζει, με δάκρυα στα μάτια, την Αυτού Εξοχότητα που λέγαμε σε ποστ προ ολίγων ημερών - τον Jamie McDermott, γενικό δερβέναγα των αγαπημένων μας Irrepressibles και, απ'ό,τι φαίνεται από τις απαντήσεις του, την ευγένειά του και το πόσο πρόθυμα και γρήγορα ανταποκρίθηκε, απίθανο τύπο γενικότερα. Anywhere. I like to engage with my environment and create music from it.

To perform this album with my Mirror Mirror spectacle. At the same time as writing the second Irrepressibles album, collaborating with other musical acts, and work on some other music that is very different to what I'm doing now.

9. What you wish to do once you retire from music?

Live a quiet life ha ha, and design and build my own home featuring many musical installations and places were children and adults can make music in the garden with specially made outdoor instruments.

I think more that people are ashamed of my sense of complete abandon when it comes to exploring anything with style. Expression is everything. I am Irrepressible!

Oh I'd like to have been Oscar Wilde in Wilde.

Swimming to school.

Some Questions #13: Efterklang!

Δέκατο τρίτο και τυχερό Some Questions, καθώς φιλοξενούμενοί του είναι οι Efterklang - ναι, οι αγαπημένοι Δανοί των οποίων το πανέμορφο πρόσφατο album βρίσκεται σταθερά στα φορητά μας mp3 players και τους οποίους περιμένουμε να δούμε (επιτέλους, μιας και την προηγούμενη φορά δεν μπορέσαμε) ζωντανά τον επόμενο μήνα. Σίγουρα θα ήταν υπέροχο να μπορούσαμε να τους δούμε με συνοδεία ορχήστρας όπως στη live εκδοχή του Parades που κυκλοφόρησαν πρόσφατα, αλλά έστω κι έτσι τους περιμένουμε με ανυπομονησία. Τους το είπαμε θέτοντάς τους παράλληλα τις ερωτήσεις μας και ο μπασίστας Rasmus Stolberg μας απάντησε τα παρακάτω, επισημαίνοντας πάντως ότι άφησε κάποιες αναπάντητες γιατί δεν είναι αυτός ο songwriter της μπάντας. Άντε, κομμάτια να γίνει, συγχωρεμένος.

Some Questions #11: Sunnybrook!

Επιτέλους, το Some Questions επιστρέφει! Και επιστρέφει με νέο αίμα... Φιλοξενούμενός μας σήμερα είναι ο Paul North από το Denton του Texas. Ο Paul είναι μέλος των Sleep Whale, της μπάντας του αδερφού του Joel, αλλά εμείς τον γνωρίσαμε με το προσωπικό του όχημα Sunnybrook σερφάροντας στο site της Lefse Records στην οποία υπέγραψε πρόσφατα. Εκεί ακούσαμε το υπέροχο "Willow Whale" που θα βρείτε στο τέλος του ποστ, μια μικρή παγανιστική γιορτή με στρώσεις από κιθάρες, μπάντζο και αιθέρια φωνητικά χαμένα μέσα σε μια φωτεινή ομίχλη από reverb - ένα πραγματικά ονειρικό εφτάλεπτο. Στο MySpace του βρήκαμε και το μικρότερο, πιο folk και εξαιρετικά catchy "Waving Hands" όπως και το "Tiger Bite" και αυτό ήταν, κολλήσαμε άσχημα. Περιμένοντας μέσα στη χρονιά το ντεμπούτο του Water Me Glow από τη Lefse του στείλαμε τις ερωτήσεις μας και μας απάντησε αμέσως!

I have a pretty extensive collection of Elliott Smith tapes; his work is my favorite.

To simply own a record store/coffee shop. I am a barista as well as a musician, and love coffee as much as sound.

Some Questions #9: Paavoharju!

Η μουσική και χριστιανική κολλεκτίβα των Paavoharju που εδρεύει σ'ένα χωριό χωμένο μέσα στα παγωμένα δάση της Φινλανδίας έπεσε στην αντίληψή μας μόλις πέρσι, αν και ο πρώτος της δίσκος (Yhä Hämärää) κυκλοφόρησε το 2005. Προλάβαμε όμως ν'ακούσουμε και να λατρέψουμε τόσο αυτόν όσο και τον δεύτερο, το υπέροχο περσινό Laulu Laakson Kukista, και να μαγευτούμε από τον, χωρίς καμία υπερβολή, παραμυθένιο ήχο τους. Οι βασικοί "εγκέφαλοι" του φοβερού αυτού τσούρμου είναι τα δυο αδέρφια Ainala και ο ένας απ'αυτούς, ο Lauri, απάντησε στο ερωτηματολόγιό μας! Some Questions #8: Clinic!

Μέχρι τώρα, σε κάθε Some Questions κάναμε μια μικρή εισαγωγή στον καλλιτέχνη που ανακρίναμε. Αυτή τη φορά όμως απλά δε χρειάζονται συστάσεις. Οι Clinic, ένα γκρουπ χρόνια στο κουρμπέτι, με εξαιρετικούς δίσκους στο ενεργητικό του, που είχαμε δει live στη χώρα μας όταν άνοιξαν τις τρεις συναυλίες των Radiohead το 2000 (κι ακόμα περιμένουμε να ξανάρθουν, μόνοι τους αυτή τη φορά) είναι οι σημερινοί μας καλεσμένοι. A lot should have been better but generally mistakes are worth making, so i'm not ashamed of anything.

Some Questions #7: Meridene!

Σημερινοί μας καλεσμένοι είναι οι Meridene. Η τετράδα από το Wisconsin κυκλοφόρησε τον πρώτο της δίσκο, You're Not Pretty, You're Worse, τον περασμένο Νοέμβριο από την Ambledown Records, και σιγά-σιγά η ανοιχτόκαρδη, ηλιόλουστη power pop τους κατακτά τη blogόσφαιρα. Οι ίδιοι αναφέρουν στις επιρροές τους ένα τσούρμο από σύγχρονες αμερικανικές indie σταθερές (Wilco, Bright Eyes, Sufjan Stevens, Shins, Death Cab For Cutie, National) και στα δικά μας αυτιά αυτή (η σταθερά) που περισσότερο προσεγγίζουν από το τσούρμο είναι οι New Pornographers - γι'αυτό ίσως να φταίνε τα γυναικεία δεύτερα φωνητικά πίσω από τον ηγέτη της μπάντας Trevor Ives. Επίσης οι Pavement, τους οποίους δεν αναφέρουν, μοιάζουν να είναι σημαντική επιρροή, τουλάχιστον ηχητικά (άλλωστε οι στίχοι και η παρουσία του Malkmus δύσκολα αναπαράγονται από οποιονδήποτε). Το line-up είναι ακόμα λίγο ασταθές (μόλις το Φλεβάρη έφυγε ο κιθαρίστας και παραγωγός του δίσκου Eric Rykal ενώ στις αρχές αυτού του μήνα προστέθηκε η μπασίστρια Alyssa Rieper, που αποτελεί ταυτόχρονα το ήμισυ των γλυκύτατων Feathe) αλλά ο Trevor μοιάζει φιλόδοξος τύπος και έτοιμος να πάει την μπάντα του ψηλά. I've been working on many parts to many songs and trying to put them together. Also hopefully by the end of the year we will be working on recording our next full length,

I would love to just be. To enjoy records and drinks and let that be everything.

I would have played Greg Peppard's role in Breakfast at Tiffanys.

12. A recurring childhood dream of yours?

I constantly have that dream where you're falling off a cliff and are jerked awake just before you hit the bottom. I've heard that if you don't wake up before you hit that you actually die. So, you know, I'm a real dream extremist.

13. If you are superstitious?

Yes, when I play darts I have to rub my hands before I throw and I knock on wood constantly.

Some Questions #6: The Dears!

Συνεχιζοντας τις ανακρίσεις, πάμε πίσω στον Καναδά και σε ένα από τα πιο σπουδαία σχήματα απ'όσα περιστοίχισαν τους Arcade Fire στην επέλαση της καναδεζικης indie σκηνής στον παγκόσμιο μουσικό χάρτη, από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας. Οι The Dears κυκλοφόρησαν το περασμένο φθινόπωρο το τέταρτο album τους, Missiles, το οποίο δυστυχώς καθυστερήσαμε ν'ακούσουμε κι έτσι έχασε τη βέβαιη θέση του στην εικοσάδα μας - περιείχε άλλωστε ένα από τα πιο επικά τραγούδια της περασμένης χρονιάς, το οχτάλεπτο "Lights Off". Φανταστείτε, λοιπόν, πόσο χαρήκαμε όταν η Natalia Yanchak, το μόνο εναπομείναν αρχικό μέλος του γκρουπ πλην του frontman Murray Lightburn, μας απάντησε αυτά που θα διαβάσετε στις επόμενες γραμμές...

Could you please tell us...

1. Three albums you’d take along on a desert island?

In no particular order, I would take: Talkie Walkie by Air, The Queen is Dead by The Smiths, and Loveless by My Bloody Valentine.

2. A song you wish you’d written?

"Hate Then Love" by The Dears

3. Your Sunday morning song?

"Sunday Morning" by K-OS

4. Your favourite b-side?

"Moon River" by Morrissey

5. Your favourite Beatles song?

"Glass Onion" from the White Album.

6. A musician/band you think is criminally underrated?

Black Diamond Bay

7. Your favourite place for writing music?

Murray does all the writing, but he gets most inspired by nature: Caribbean beaches, Canadian boreal forests in the summer, cottage country and mountain tops, you know, that sort of thing.

8. What your music-related plans are for the next 12 months?

We are preparing for a big North American tour in May/June. Murray has been writing a lot and working on new songs in our home studio. So probably a bit of pre-production and new stuff in the in-between times.

9. What you wish to do once you retire from music?

I'd love to have a nice garden, be self-sufficient, grow our own food. I think we would probably move to the country and live and eat well... basically I want to live out the cooking show "Jamie at Home." Big adobe wood oven, cooking in the back yard. Just good stuff.

10. A stylistic choice you’ve made and are now ashamed of?

I'm pretty conservative stylistically. I mean I appreciate fashion and dressing well but I like to do it with a certain timelessness. I'm only embarrassed about stuff I did in high school. Like being into magic tricks, Night Court, Monty Python, having bad glasses and other goofy things... that I'm actually not ashamed of, they were just silly, really.

11. Which role you would like to have played if you were an actor?

I am a terrible actor. Whenever we make music videos we always have to argue with the directors, trying to convince them that we are musicians, not actors! I don't like to pretend, I like to live a real life. So this is a boring answer but I am perfectly happy being myself in the everyday movie of me.

12. A recurring childhood dream of yours?

Sometimes I dream of the grassy garden at my parent's house in Toronto. There is a little grassy hill and as a child I would have vivid, psychedelic dreams about an entire tiny, gnome-filled wonderland existing underground. There are so many different paths a dream can take that the same dream never happens twice; only figments of dreams, re-assembled to follow another day's memories.

13. If you are superstitious?

I am... but not like about the number 13, broken mirrors or black cats or anything like that. I believe in fate and luck: I believe that all things happen for a reason, and that we should never pass up a chance to make a wish (like on a shooting star) or be hopeful about the future. We can't control our own destiny but I think we can influence positive things to happen by living and loving others in a positive way. Is karma a superstition?

Sometimes my daughter, Neptune, is full of beans.

Some Questions #5: The Cloud Hymn!

Πίσω από το μυστηριώδες όνομα The Cloud Hymn κρύβεται στην ουσία ένας άνθρωπος, ο οποίος στην καθημερινή του ζωή ονομάζεται John Nielsen. Πρόκειται για έναν νεαρό τραγουδοποιό από το Wisconcin, ο οποίος έγραψε κάμποσα τραγούδια σε μια απλή ακουστική κιθάρα ενόσω σπούδαζε δικηγόρος. Για την ακρίβεια σπουδάζει ακόμα, και προσπαθεί να πάρει το πτυχίο του. Παράλληλα, όμως, ηχογράφησε τα κομμάτια μέσα σε δυο μέρες και τα κυκλοφόρησε πριν περίπου ένα μήνα στον πρώτο του δίσκο, με τίτλο A Seed Buried In The Ground, από την Ambledown Records.

Τόσο ο τίτλος του δίσκου όσο και η συντομία της ηχογράφησης προδίδουν μια αίσθηση "φυσικότητας", και πράγματι, με αυτό ακριβώς έχουμε να κάνουμε. Απλά, ζεστά αρπίσματα της ακουστικής κιθάρας στήνουν τη ραχοκοκαλιά των τραγουδιών, και μια φωνή που ακούγεται πιο "γεμάτη" συναισθηματικά απ'ό,τι λέει η ηλικία της σκαρώνει ανεπητίδευτες μελωδικές γραμμές πάνω της. Τα δεύτερα φωνητικά της Tani Alyssa και το πιάνο του Paul Brandt προσθέτουν εδώ κι εκεί παλ πινελιές χρώματος στο χειμωνιάτικο τοπίο του John, και κάπου εκεί τελειώνουν οι έξωθεν βοήθειες. Ο νεαρός κύριος Nielsen προσπαθεί να ξορκίσει τα κακά πνεύματα βασικά μόνος, και στην πορεία μας προσφέρει μερικές πολύ όμορφες στιγμές.
